Plastic Surgery in the Philippines

A reconstructive nose surgery, septoplasty differs from rhinoplasty for strictly aesthetic purposes. As a result, septoplasty can be covered by social security in the Philippines.

Septoplasty in the Philippines

Septoplasty aims to correct or straighten a deviation of the nasal septum, commonly called the nasal septum. This is the inner wall of the nose separating the 2 nasal cavities. The septum is made up of cartilage at the front which gives the shape of the nose and a bony back portion covered with mucous membrane.

The need for a septoplasty in the Philippines is proven when the nasal septum is not straight and leads to various disturbances: nasal obstruction and difficulty breathing, sinusitis, or even migraines.

Septoplasty is not indicated when there is no associated respiratory discomfort. It can be operated on in order to treat a deviated nose without breathing problems, but it is then a purely cosmetic surgery without possible support from social security.

Septoplasty is indicated as a functional surgery, but also an aesthetic one. It can be combined with rhinoplasty (rhinoseptoplasty) or performed alone for purely aesthetic purposes to correct the bridge of the nose. In this case, it will not be supported by social security.

Indications: why and when to do a septoplasty in the Philippines?

In general, the septum is not entirely straight in humans. When the deviation is too significant, septoplasty is necessary to improve the patient's quality of life. Its primary purpose is then to improve breathing.

The deviation of the nasal septum has mainly 2 origins. It can be congenital or due to trauma (accident or shock) significantly deforming the nose.

Complications and symptoms in the Philippines caused by a deviated nasal septum are mainly:

  • nasal obstruction: a nostril is then completely blocked,

  • stagnation of nasal secretions leading to sinus and ear infections,

  • headaches,

  • snoring,

  • nose deformity.

The deviation of the nasal septum is most often associated with a deviation of the nose, and in this case, requires a rhinoplasty performed by a cosmetic surgeon. When the request is purely based on ventilatory function with no cosmetic request, an ENT surgeon is more appropriate.

How is a septoplasty performed in the Philippines?

Before a nasal septoplasty in the Philippines

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure. In this sense, it necessarily requires a preoperative consultation with the surgeon. The latter begins with a clinical examination in the Philippines (radiology and possibly radioscopy) of the nasal septum to assess the degree of deviation and determine the technique to be used for the straightening operation of the nasal septum.

This appointment also allows the practitioner to explain to you the reason for the choice of the operating mode, the advantages of the realization as well as its limits. You will also be kept informed of the possible complications and risks of septoplasty in the Philippines. During this meeting, take the time to ask questions in case of doubt. Do not hesitate, this first consultation is also made to reassure you. At the end of the interview, you will receive an information sheet and a detailed estimate. From there, the law grants you a reflection period of at least 15 days to make a decision.

A few days before the operation (48 hours before the surgery at the latest), the first blood tests will be completed by a consultation with the anesthesiologist. In the event of an allergy, depending on your medical history and current treatments, the anesthesiologist will take the necessary measures.

During a nasal septoplasty in the Philippines

The septoplasty is done under general anesthesia. The intervention requires hospitalization for 24 to 48 hours. Depending on the case, the duration of an operation on the nasal septum lasts between one and two hours. Typically, the surgeon operates intranasally (through the nostrils) to remove or move and reshape the deviating part. However, sometimes the surgeon operates an external septoplasty in the Philippines. The latter requires a small incision at the base of the nose. At the end of the operation, the surgeon places fatty compresses in the nostrils (indo-nasal wicks) and installs a cast or a splint on the nose to maintain the remodeling.

After nasal septoplasty in the Philippines

The intranasal locks will be removed from the day after the operation until the 5th day at the latest following the operation. 7 days after the operation at the earliest or 10 days at the latest, the surgeon in the Philippines will remove the cast or splint during a post-operative follow-up check if a rhinoplasty was performed at the same time.

You can then observe bruises on the nose but these will disappear after two weeks at the latest. It is particularly important to be careful in the 3 months following the operation: the nose must not undergo any shock or other trauma.

What is the cost of a septoplasty in the Philippines?

If it is reconstructive surgery, the septoplasty costs between 4500 and 5500 euros in the Philippines. In the case of purely cosmetic surgery, the price varies between 4500 and 7500 euros depending on its importance and complexity. A functional rhinoplasty (if the deviation causes breathing difficulties) can be reimbursed by social security. The prices indicated include the surgeon's fees, hospitalization if applicable, the cost of the operation itself, and follow-up consultations.

Answers to your questions about nasal septoplasty

When to have septoplasty?

Septoplasty is mainly intended for people with a deviated nasal septum causing medical consequences (impaired breathing, snoring, etc.). A simple aesthetic correction will be more like rhinoplasty.

How long will my nose be stuffy?

After the intranasal strands are removed, you will feel discomfort and have a stuffy nose for several days. These sensations are explained by the presence of residual edema.

What are the possible complications of septoplasty?

Septoplasty can lead to more or less severe complications:

  • bruises on the eyelids that will disappear after a few days;

  • hemorrhages (small blood losses are not serious but serious hemorrhage requires hospitalization);

  • a hump resection problem that can be corrected with a minor touch-up surgery at the earliest 6 months after the initial operation.

  • A recurrence of the deformation in some cases due to the memory of the cartilaginous deformation
